Economic reality crashes dream weddingsIf that's not a depressing headline, I don't know what is. But the article itself is pretty upbeat, offering stories of how brides can "embrace their inner tightwad" to save on their big day. Think ebay for wedding gowns, paring down your guest list, and staying in the U.S. for your honeymoon.
Brides are also thinking about their guests by making sure that there's a range of prices in registry items. Some are doing honeymoon registries instead. With this year's average wedding cost expected to be nearly 30% lower than 2007's average, lots of couples are making changes to lower their budgets.
When Suze Orman appeared on Oprah last fall to give viewers a "reality check" about finances, one couple was watching and took her advice to heart. Bill and Kerry decided not to take a honeymoon at all based on Orman's advice. Orman's response: "So here we have a couple that's getting married and they're doing it the right way...doing what matters versus doing something they can't afford. I love that."
